THE Lord Chief Justice has directed courts to close for a short period tomorrow for the funeral of the former Recorder of Derry Judge Corinne Philpott QC.

Sir Declan Morgan says court due to sit tomorrow morning will be postponed until 2 pm accommodate the funeral of Judge Philpott QC.

The 62-year-old died peacefully at her Co Antrim home on Thursday night surrounded by her husband David McAlister, son Christopher and other family members.

Her funeral service will take place at 11 am.

Judge Philpott QC, who at the time of her death was the deputy Recorder of Belfast, had been battling against cancer.

The Lord Chief Justice last week described her as a “trail blazer” having been the first woman to be appointed a county and crown court judge.

The present Recorder of Derry Judge Philip Babington expressed his condolences last Friday to her family at her death.

A minute’s silence was observed in Derry Crown Court as a mark of respect.
