RETURN OF THE DISSIDENT BOMBERS: TWO VIABLE PIPE DEVICES FOUND IN DERRY

Feeny bomb 2POLICE have recovered two pipe bombs in the Highmoor Road area of Derry.

The devices were found during an operation on Thursday afternoon involving police and British Army bomb disposal officers.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit based at Maydown are now trying to catch those behind making and leave the lethal devices.

Area policing boss Chief Inspector Gordon McCalmont said: “These devices were viable and I welcome the fact that we have discovered them and made them safe.

“One line of enquiry is that these devices are connected to violent dissident Republican terrorism.

“While there are a small minority who are intent to cause terror in our community, this operation shows that police remain committed to keeping people safe and we will continue to work tirelessly to do so.

“I would appeal to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the Highmoor Road area yesterday or in recent days to contact us on the non-emergency number 101.

“Alternatively, information can also be given anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
