The Tower Museum
THE Tower Museum will set the scene this evening for a fascinating talk about the hidden stories of women who played a key role in the Easter Rising, as part of the special Series running at the Museum in conjunction with the Nerve Centre’s Creative Centenaries programme.
Author, Curator and Historian Sinead McCoole will reveal some of the untold stories of women who took up arms to support the cause based on the findings of her books ‘No Ordinary Women’ ‘Guns and Chiffon’ and ‘Easter Widows.’
The talk will focus on the women volunteers of the Cumann Na mBann and some of the stories of bravery and dedication to Irish Independence that would otherwise be lost to history.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Elisha McCallion, said the talk would offer a fascinating insight into local history.
“The talks series about the events of 1916 has so far been extremely popular and this particular instalment is extremely important in recognising the contribution that women made during such a significant period of Irish history.
“These women were just as dedicated to achieving Irish independence as their male counterparts and were prepared to sacrifice both their lives and their freedom for the greater good of the country.
“I think the talk will provide a whole new perspective on the role of women in Irish Society at the time, a time when they were restricted in so many ways in other areas. I would really recommend that anyone with an interest in Irish history or feminist literature to go along on Wednesday.”
The free talk will take place this evening, Wednesday, June 1, 7 pm in the Tower Museum.
