healthy workplaceTHE Western Trust Catering and Health Improvement Departments are working in partnership with the Public Health Agency (PHA) to encourage staff and the public to Check, Choose and Enjoy!

‘Check the calories, Choose wisely and Enjoy their food’ while dining in the staff restaurants

It has been launched firstly in he South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen.

But scheme will be rolled out to all hospitals in the trust area including Altnagelvin and Gransha.

The Western Trust is committed to promoting the health and well-being of staff, clients, patients and all members of the community.

More than one in two adults in Northern Ireland are overweight or obese, yet many are not aware of this and do not realise the impact it has on their health, such as increased risk of heart disease, stroke, some cancers and Type 2 diabetes.

Although 61% of adults in Northern Ireland are overweight, the Northern Ireland Health Survey showed that 43% of those assessed as overweight perceived their weight to be about right or too light.

Teresa Molloy, Director of Performance and Service Improvement for the Western Trust said: “This new initiative is about encouraging the public and our health and social care staff to make healthier life choices with regards to the food they are eating within the Hospital facilities.

“A review of the lunch menu within the South West Acute Hospital’s staff restaurant has taken place to ensure that as a Trust we are promoting a healthy diet.

“Nutritional information including calorie content will be displayed allowing staff and the public to make an informed decision about what they have for lunch.

“The Trust is committed to supporting staff and the public to promote their own health and well-being; this is just one of the many programmes that the Trust has in place to allow them to do this.”
