THOUSANDS of people took part in the 35 th anniversary of the HungersStrikes in Derry yesterday.
Derry men Patsy O’Hara and Michael Devine were among the 10 republican prisoners who died in the fast-to-death H-Block protest.
The main parade left the Creggan shops (Central Drive) at 2.30pm and walked eto the former home of Mickey Devine at Rathkeele Way before it proceeded on to the former home of Patsy O’Hara in Bishop Street.
The parade then made its way to the H-Block monument in Rossville Street.
Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson said: “I was proud to take part in the 35th anniversary of the 1981 Hungerstrikes today in Derry.
“The Republican community will never ever forget the sacrifice those 10 brave men, and their families, made for our struggle and we will forever be proud of them.
“This Thursday May 5th, as we take to the polls, is the 35th anniversary of Bobby Sands.
“Remember that as you mark your ballot paper, remember what Bobby died for.
“He died for equality, fairness and representation – all of which Sinn Féin delivers.”
