IT’S all change at the Walled City Market in Derry’s Guildhall Square.
Fresh fish, artisan breads and quality Dexter beef are among the produce you can now buy.
Thanks to an investment by Derry City and Strabane District Council the Walled City Market has been given a major boost.
The market now has a new brand and new look in an effort to increase footfall and promote the city and region’s high end offering of quality artisan food and craft produce on the first Saturday of every month.
The new market will first open next Saturday 07 May and will operate from 9am to 4pm offering a wide range of quality food and craft produce.
There will also be family entertainment including a Kidz Farm, where children will be encouraged to interact with small farm animals such as chickens, rabbits and donkeys.
The market will have over 20 stalls selling high quality speciality foods ranging from fresh fish, Dexter beef, homemade jams and preserves, artisan bread and cakes, sweet treats and handcrafted products such as scented soaps, knitwear and candles.
There will be street food on sale throughout the day thanks to Pykes and Pommes and freshly brewed coffee and crepes.
Welcoming the new-look market to the city, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Elisha McCallion says she is delighted the market has been enhanced and is confident it will be a great success with locals and visitors to the city and region.
“The Walled City Market has been in existence for a number of years and this investment by Council to enhance and promote it, is good news for everyone.
“We are delighted with the quality of traders we have taking part and believe it is a fantastic way of showcasing local produce and supporting small businesses.
“I am delighted that the event will have a strong family focus and believe the Kidz Farm which will allow children to pet and engage with small animals, will be a great draw,” she commented.
The Mayor added that the event also coincides with the 71st anniversary of the Surrender of the U-boats and a series of events taking place at the Guildhall and the Tower Museum.
Louise Breslin, Business Opportunities Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council says she is delighted with the uptake from local and regional traders to participate in the market.
“We were really keen to improve and enhance our market offering and to offer customers a wide range of high end produce.
“We carried out some research which indicated that the public are keen to be able to buy fresh fish, artisan breads and quality craft gifts.
“We feel that the selection of produce we have on offer is what customers are looking for and believe the market will be a great success for everyone involved.
“It’s up to the public now to come along every month and support the traders and be part of the Market experience,“ she said.
Jim Roddy, Chief Executive of the City Centre Initiative is very supportive of the market and welcomes the investment by Council to enhance and improve it.
