FOYLE MP Mark Durkan has expressed his sadness at the tragic death of devoted Derry nun Sister Clare Thereas Crockett.

The nun, who is originally from the Brandywell area of the city, was one of 272 people in huge earthquake which struck Ecuador over the weekend.

Her religious order, the Home of the Mother, said Sister Clare was was based at a school in Playa Prieta.

The 33-year-old was apparently trying to lead a number of people from the school when the earthquake struck and the stairwell she was on collapsed.

The Order said six of their members died in the tragedy.

No children were in the school at the time as it was the weekend.

In a statement today, Mark Durkan said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sister Clare Theresa Crockett.

“The sympathies of everyone in Derry will be with Sister Clare’s family today.

“While no words can console Sister Clare’s family on the loss of such a special person,

“I hope that everyone’s sympathy and support will bring them some comfort at this very sad time.”
