THIS is the loyalist who faced a court in Derry charged with the sectarian murder of Derry Paul McCauley.

Concealing his face was Matthew Brian Gillen from Kennedy Place in the Fountain area, who appeared at Derry Magistrates’ Court earlier today for a first remand hearing.

The 28-year-old is also charged with grievous bodily harm and attempted GBH.

Gillen is known to police over his associations with the UDA.

He was released on bail of £2,000.

Mr McCauley died nine years after he was attacked at a barbecue in the city in 2006.

A 61-year-old man who was arrested in Kent, England on Wednesday has been charged with withholding information in relation to the civil servant’s murder.

He was released on police bail and will appear in court on May 4.

A third man arrested this week, aged 27, has been released on bail.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team believed a loyalist mob of up to 15 people were involved in the attack.

Paul McCauley suffered serious head injuries in the attack near Chapel Road in the Waterside area of the city.

Those who attacked him later fled on foot in the direction of Irish Street.

Paul, a father of one, died in a care facility in June 2015.

The following month, Piper John McClements, previously known as Daryl Proctor, was charged with Mr McCauley’s murder.

Detectives have urged anyone with information about those involved to contact them on 101 or to ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
