Cllr Patsy Kelly has quit the SDLP and will as an independent candidate in Assembly elections

COUNCILLOR Patsy Kelly has dramatically quit the SDLP.

He has left the party grouping on Derry City and Strabane District Council and will run in next month’s Assembly election as an independent candidate.

It is bad news for the SDLP as Cllr Kelly’s decision could cause a split in its votes and leave the door open for Sinn Fein to capitalise on May 5.

Councillor Josephine Deehan has also resigned from the party on Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.

She too will run as an independent.

The SDLP haS yet to respond to the resignations so close to the Assembly election.
