ELDERLY MAN KNOCKED DOWN AND KILLED IN DERRY

policeroadclosedA MAN has been knocked down and killed in Derry.

The 70-year-old was walking when he was struck on the Culmore Road just before 7 pm on  Sunday night.

The accident happened between Greenhaw Road and the Pennyburn roundabout.

He was taken by ambulance to Altnagelvin Hospital but later tragically died of his injuries.

The road remains closed while the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit examines the scene.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: “A 70-year-old man has died after being struck by a car on Culmore Road in Derry last night.

“The collision was reported to police shortly before 6.55pm.

“The Culmore Road remains closed this morning and a diversion is in place.

“Police investigating the circumstances of the collision are appealing for witnesses.

“The number to call 101.”

SDLP leader and MLA for Foyle, Colum Eastwood, tweeted: “Very sad news. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
