DERRY SDLP Cllr Angela Dobbins has condemned joyriders who crashed a stolen car into the garden of a local pensioner in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Brigid Gallagher had a lucky escape when the car crashed into the back of her property.

She was fast asleep when the silver hatchback, which had been driving at speed along Lenamore Road, crashed through a wooden fence before hitting the back wall of her Oakgrove home.

Such was the speed of the vehicle that part of the wooden fence ended up on the roof of her home.

Cllr Dobbins said: “This type of crime is on the rise in the local area and although the pensioner was asleep at the time she was very skaken by the incident.

“I would appeal to those that are partaking in these activities to take a step back and think of the consequences of their actions before it is too late because.

“It will be only a matter of time before they cause a tragedy or serious injury to themselves or to innocent victims.

“I am requesting the PSNI and local community wardens to step up measures to prevent further incidents of this kind.

“There is an element within our community that are intent to satisfy their need for thrills.

“They have no regard for the trail of hardship and turmoil they leave in their wake,” added Cllr Dobbins.
