SINN Féin Education spokesperson Councillor Patricia Logue has welcomed the improvement in children’s performance in post primary schools.

Councillor Logue said: “The latest figures make positive reading as they again show an increase in the number of children achieving better grades as well as a narrowing of performance indicators between grammar and non grammar schools.

“The latest figures are testament to the strategy employed by Education Minister John O’Dowd to allow every child to fulfil their potential and maximise their educational experience.

“The number of children achieving five or more GCSEs including English and Maths has again increased, which has now taken the increase to over 10% since 2008/9.

“The gap between the performance of children attending grammar and non-grammar schools has also narrowed highlighting again the need to abolish academic selection at eleven.

“I would like to commend the Minister John O’Dowd, teachers, students and parents for contributing to the rise in standards and will continue to support them in improving equality and academic excellence in our schools.”
