POLICE are appealing for information about a number of weekend burglaries and the unauthorised taking and driving away of three family cars in Derry over the weekend.

The PSNI say the first of the burglaries occurred in the area of Prehen Park at about 2.30am on Sunday.

Car keys were taken from a house and a grey Honda Accord driven away by the dead of night burglars.

Around an hour later, a Volkswagen Jetta was stolen from Maybrook Park, off Racecourse Road.

Then burglars broke into a house at Helen Street, off Creggan Hill, and stole the keys of a Toyota Auris, which was driven away.

Police say that around 5 am officers received a report that the Honda Accord and the Volkswagen Jetta were spotted stuck in mud at Baldrick Crescent in the nearby Rosemount area.

They said locals reported that several males spent about an hour trying to get them free.

The Jetta and the Accord were later recovered but the Toyota Auris has not yet been located.

Investigating officer Constable Cummings urged anyone with information about the incidents to contact police at Strand Road on the non-emergency 101 number.

“Alternatively, it can be given to Crimestoppers anonymously on freephone 0800 555 111,” he added.
