Patrick McEleney is leaving Derry City for either St Pat’s or Dundalk

DERRY City’s Patrick McEleney has failed to agree a new deal with the club and is set to join either St Pat’ Athletic or Dundalk for the new 2016 SSE Airtricity League season.

The 23-year-old says the Brandywell club offered him “basically the same deal” as he was on last season.

His exit is a blow for the Candy Stripes as he was their best player during a difficult season for the club.

Manager Kenny Shiels said that he was “disappointed” not to have the player’s services for the new season which starts on Friday, March 4, 2016.

“I’m not disappointed in Patrick, I’m just disappointed for Patrick,” says new boss Shiels.

“I feel myself and my management team would have been the perfect fit for him.

“From a footballing point of view I think it’s not the best move for Patrick but it’s one he’s made and I respect that.”
