SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson will speak at an event in Derry tomorrow on what is being done to help Syrian refugees coming to the North.
Speaking ahead of the event, which has been organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council, Ms Anderson said;
“The harrowing images of families fleeing conflict in Syria and elsewhere have touched people across the world.
“I have seen at first hand the misery of refugees when I traveled to reception centres in Lampedusa and refugee camps in Jordan.
“The people of the North have responded to the humanitarian crisis and we are now preparing to welcome the first Syrian refugees before Christmas.
“Sinn Féin have been to the fore in supporting the rights of refugees and working to ensure that proper structures are in place to welcome them into our community.
“As an MEP, I will continue to put pressure on the international community, and the European Union in particular, to prioritise supporting refugees and tackling the growing humanitarian crisis throughout Syria, the Middle East and Europe.”
