FRESH TROUBLE ERUPTS IN GALLIAGH AS SCHOOL IS ATTACKED

psnilandroverTHERE has been fresh trouble on the streets tonight in Derry following a security operation.

A mob of up 50 youths were involved in the disturbances in the Galliagh area of the city, the scenes of ongoing street disorder in recent weeks and months.

Locals say Moss Road has been blocked by a burning barricade.

Stone-throwing youths have smashed windows in St Paul’s Primary School.

As part of the trouble, street road signs have been pulled up out at the roots from the ground.

It is understood the youths went on the rampage following the search of a house in Altcar Park.

Police tasked British Army Technical Officers to the scene.

On Monday night, bricks and other missiles were thrown at police vehicles in the same estate following a house search by police.

Police had been carrying out a search operation in Galliagh’s Altcar Park area of the city just before 6 pm on Monday.

No officers were injured during the trouble.

Chief Inspector Alan Hutton, the PSNI’s Operations Manager for Derry City and Strabane policing district, said the following day: “Unfortunately, this was not the only incident of its kind on Monday night.

“Elsewhere, stones were thrown at passing vehicles at Madams Bank Road and we have a report of at least one car having been struck.

“These attacks pose a risk of injury to motorists, with possible dangers to other people, should a driver lose control.

“I would ask those with influence in the community to use it to bring incidents like these to an end.

“Those who engage in such incidents should also consider the impact on the community and the adverse effect that a conviction could have on their lives in the long term.”
