James is surrounded by Sunderland players

WEST Brom’s James McClean has escaped punishment after his celebrations in front of Sunderland fans following Saturday’s 1-0 win.

The Derry player’s fist-pumping delight sparked ugly scenes on an off the pitch.

After the referee blew the final whistle,  James punched the air in front of the Sunderland fans.

The Black Cat supporters responded with sectarian chants of ‘F**k the IRA’.

And as tempers boiled, James was confronted by Sunderland players during on-field brawl that erupted on the pitch.

The English Football Association has formally warned James about his behaviour.

Both clubs have been reminded of their responsibilities.

After the game, Baggies boss Tony Pulis said: “He’s not the sharpest tool in the box, and that’s not being disrespectful to him.

“But he’s a smashing lad.”

James joined the Baggies in the summer in a £1.5 million deal from Wigan Athletic.

The 26-year-old Republic of Ireland international previously played for Sunderland.
