James is surrounded by Sunderland players

DERRY footballer James McClean has been subjected to bigoted and hateful abuse on social media sites after celebrating West Brom’s 1-0 win over former club Sunderland.

McClean remains angry over how Sunderland treated him during the poppy dispute in 2012 when he refused to wear club jersey with the emblem for a game against Everton.

The Derryman later claimed Sunderland hung him out to dry.

And after the final whistle in the win today McClean celebrated in front of the visiting Sunderland fans – clenching his fists – and had to be pulled away by Craig Gardner after being confronted by several Sunderland players.

A tirade of sickening comments about James and his family followed on social media.

One fan said McClean had been “raised by dogs” and was “inhuman”.

Another fan wished McClean a “slow painful death”.

Other more vile anti-Irish and sectarian comments were also posted online.
