SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has welcomed the unveiling of a mural in the Bogside area of Derry which pays tribute to civil rights leaders John Hume and Ivan Cooper.

He has described the two men as ‘visionary, non-sectarian democrats who stood strong for the rights of all people’.

Speaking after attending yesterday’s unveiling, Mr Durkan said: “John Hume and Ivan Cooper were leaders in using non-violence to challenge an unjust political order, structured inequality and rank discrimination.

“They also resolutely opposed the use of violence for the injury and injustice it would wreak, the lives it would wreck, and the rights it would violate.

“As visionary, non-sectarian democrats, they stood strong for the rights of all people and worked for what would be right for our whole people.

“This mural is therefore a welcome appreciation of the service, leadership and inspiration both men offered.”
