Supt Mark McEwan says loyalist link to Derry pipe bomb attack being investigated

THE top cop in Derry says a loyalist paramilitary link to a weekend pipe bomb attacks is being investigated by detectives.

District commander Supt Mark McEwan says the police are following several lines of inquiry including “sectarian motivation”.

A pipe bomb device was left on the window sill of a home in the Waterside’s Lincoln Park.

A woman inside, who is a member of the local LGBT community, cheated in injury in the attack on Saturday night around 10.10 pm.

Police have advised the woman, who is in her 20s and only moved into the house ten months ago, not to return to the property for her own safety.

Added Supt McEwan: “There are other motivating factors in this hate crime, such as the fact that the victim herself is a member of the LGBT community.

“Naturally, we wouldn’t rule out paramilitary involvement in any sort of attack of this nature.”

Local DUP councillor Drew Thompson denied the attack was sectarian or involved loyalist paramilitaries.

But he didn’t know what the motive for the attack was given that a deadly pipe bomb, similar to ones used by the UDA in recent months, was left on the window sill.
