FOYLE MLA Colum Eastwood has called on the Executive to progress SDLP proposals for a City Deal for Derry that would give the city the power to chart its own course and regenerate the local economy.
Mr Eastwood was speaking in the Assembly just days after he announced that he was going to challenged for the leadership of his party in November.
The MLA has the backing of his party across Derry to topple Dr Alasdair McDonnell.
His backers want the SDLP leader to be in the Assembly, not at Westminister.
Said Mr Eastwood: “The long term neglect of the North/West is not news to anyone who lives here.
“Historic underinvestment in infrastructure, skills and jobs has left us at the wrong end of too many league tables.
“It’s time for an end to the positive words, the pleasant platitudes and the nice reports. People living in the North/West deserve better than having strategy after strategy sitting on a shelf.
“That’s why the SDLP has been pursuing a plan to deliver more power for Derry.
“We have already had discussions with the Secretary of State and Treasury Officials who have said that they will look positively on an approach from the Executive for a City Deal.
“Glasgow Council is already benefitting from a City Deal plan and is expected to draw down in the region of £1 Billion for investment in their city.
“With that kind of economic power, Derry could set its own course and finally address the serious regional economic imbalance.
“One year ago I asked OFMdFM how it plans to deliver against the One Plan. They have yet to answer.
“Three months ago I asked how they would progress the North West Gateway Initiative. They have yet to answer.
“The SDLP has a positive economic plan for Derry. Where others have no answers, we will step up and stand up for Derry.”
