On the run rapist and sex offender John Patrick Smyth now back behind bars

A convicted rapist who was unlawfully at large from a Co Derry jail has been hunted down.

Sex offender John Patrick Smyth was arrested on Wednesday by the PSNI and returned to Magilligan jail.

He had been absent without leave from the jail since Monday of this week.

Smyth could now face criminal prosecution for breaching his release conditions into the community.

The 29-year-old had been allowed on home leave but failed to return to the prison by September 14.

Drug user Smyth was serving a sentence for gross indecency with or towards a child, rape, aggravated assault, armed with offensive weapon with intent to commit offence and threats to kill.

He was described as having a fair complexion, of 1.7 metres tall of medium build.

Smyth also has blue eyes and brown hair.

His distinguishing marks included: Back – Upper – Scar – Left shoulder, Leg – Lower Left – Scar, Leg – Lower Left – Scar, Back – Upper – Scar, Back – Upper – Scar – Lt shoulder, Back – Upper – Scar, Hand – Right – Tattoo – Ftw & dots on knuckles, Hand – Right – Tattoo – Ftw + dots on knuckles, Hand – Left – Tattoo – Dots, Hand – Left – Tattoo – Dots, Arm – Lower Right – Tattoo – Y.I.R.A, Arm – Lower Left – Tattoo –  Tyler, Arm – Upper Left – Vaccination Mark’.
