EASTWOOD: SDLP RIGHT NOT BACK ASSEMBLY ADJOURNMENT MOTION

DERRY SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood says his party have been vindicated by their decision not to vote for the adjournment of the Assembly.

The party refused to back a DUP motion yesterday at the Assembly’s Business Committee to have the political institutions adjourned.

Twenty-four hours earlier DUP leader Peter Robinson said if the Assembly was not adjourned or suspended he would bring the Executive down.

But when the SDLP refused to back his motion, the DUP had only the support of the Alliance and it failed.

Instead, Mr Robinson resigned as First Minister and he pulled out all his other ministers except Arlene Foster.

She has taken over as temporary First Minister and will remain as Finance Minister.

Mr Eastwood said today: “It is absolutely clear that Peter Robinson had no intentions of pulling the institutions down.”
