SDLP MLA John Dallat says UVF flag must be removed from Derry to Belfast rail route

EAST Derry SDLP MLA John Dallat has called for the urgent removal of a UVF flag hoisted on a signal box along the Derry to Belfast railway line.

Railway staff fear the loyalist terror flag could obscure the signal and endanger train drivers and passengers using the main Derry to Belfast route.

Said Mr Dallat: “I was appalled to learn that a UVF flag has been erected on a signal light on the main Derry to Belfast railway line.

“This is not the first time that paramilitary flags have been placed along the route but past experience has shown that there is an unacceptable reluctance to remove these grossly offensive and illegal flags.

“People just want to live in peace and without the threat of paramilitary thugs.

“This issue needs to be resolved urgently and the flag removed as soon as possible.”

In a statement, Translink said: “We are aware of a paramilitary flag placed on NI Railways property near Jordanstown Road.

“We are speaking to local community representatives regarding its removal.”
