THIS was the scene just before midnight last night after a bomb designed to kill police officers exploded in a bin in Derry.

The Skeoge Road area is now sealed off – with a police helicopter overhead as a follow-up security operation continues.

No police officers were in the area at the time; and thankfully no civilians were walking by at the time.

The Skeoge Road is closed between the Glengalliagh roundabout and the Buncrana Road.
Emma O’Donnell, who lives nearby, said: “The explosion was quite loud. I thought the window was going to come in.

“I almost felt the house shake. I thought it was a bomb going off.

“My granny is 90 years of age and she is bed bound.

“She didn’t hear much so thank God.”

The explosion has caused massive disruption to road users today.
