THE SDLP has paid tribute to press officer Stephen McKieran who has died after an illness.
In a statement, the party said today: “It was with deep sadness that the SDLP heard of the death of our friend and colleague Stephen McKiernan.
“Stephen was a Communications Officer with the SDLP Group in the NI Assembly where his time as a journalist with a local newspaper stood him in great stead.
“Stephen had a gentle way that was full of authority. When asked for his view or advice, it was always offered and never imposed. Invariably he was right in the not straightforward world of politics.
“His wisdom belied his youth. He saw life, issues and people very clearly. His intuition and judgment made him formidable as a person and in his workplace he was respected by politicians, colleagues and journalists alike.
“Travelling from Trillick to Belfast and back every day, in good health and ill, without complaint, showed not only his commitment to work with the SDLP but also his character and selflessness.
“Outside of work, Stephen was a committed GAA fan, Tyrone through and through. He cared about his community and was proud of his county. He took the time to learn Irish, spending time in the Gaeltachts of Donegal to brush up on the language.
“First and most of all Stephen was a loving husband, father and son.
“There is a sadness across the SDLP. When someone who you care for dies, a part of each of us dies as well and that is how we feel.
“He was much more than an employee, colleague or press officer, he was a part of the SDLP family. We will miss him and his immense qualities terribly.
“The SDLP offer our sincere sympathy to his wife Julie, his children Grace, Dara and Éabha, parents and entire family circle.”
The stateement added: “Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam usal.”
