THE Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District is calling on people across the district to sign up to walk for a world without dementia as part of the Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraising event.
The Foyle Memory Walk is taking place at Ebrington Square on the banks of the River Foyle on Sunday 6thSeptember 2015.
Walkers can choose between a short stroll around a 1K route or a longer walk of 10km, with fun activities and entertainment throughout the afternoon on the Square.
Ilex Facilities Manager, Paul Doherty has ensured that Ebrington is in tip top condition for the event and the team of volunteer organisers look forward to welcoming everyone for a truly memorable day.
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion, joined forces this week with the Alzheimer’s Society to launch the Foyle Memory Walk 2015 at her Nanny’s house.
She invited Alzheimer’s Society staff and volunteers to meet the lady who motivated her to fundraise on the charity’s behalf during her mayoral year to help people living with dementia.
Mayor McCallion’s grandmother, Betty Anderson, has been living with dementia for several years and her entire family have faithfully supported the Foyle Memory Walk as a testament to the inspirational lady at the very heart of their family circle.
Mayor McCallion said she hoped to see a fantastic turn out for the event. “The campaign against Dementia is a cause that’s very close to my heart and the Alzheimer’s Society do some amazing work supporting local families living with the daily challenges of the disease. Dementia is something that affects so many families, and we should all be active in raising funds to help combat and cope with the condition.
“I am calling on everyone to get behind the campaign, and dedicate a couple of hours on September 6 to raising awareness about Dementia by taking part in this brilliant event. I would also be delighted to see people volunteering to assist on the day.”
Maeveen McNabb, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We are thrilled that the Mayor has chosen to support us this year and that with the assistance of council staff she is helping us to ensure that this Foyle Memory Walk will be the best yet.
“The Waterside Half Marathon takes place on the same day as the Memory Walk creating a “something for everyone” event. This is an excellent opportunity for families and friends to get together and enjoy a day to remember with lots of fun, entertainment and refreshments.
“We want this year to be the biggest walk yet in Foyle. People of all ages and abilities can join in, from grandparents to grandchildren, and even your furry four-legged friends. It’s a day for everyone to come together, celebrate loved ones affected by dementia, and raise money to reclaim the future.
”We need THOUSANDS of people to walk with us – because arm in arm, step by step and pound by pound, we will get there.”
