A FORMER DUP councillor who quit the party eight years in protest over its decision to share power with Sinn Fein has died.
Mr Cubitt, who was a DUP stalwart all his life, died today. He was in his late 70s.
He bitterly attacked the DUP in February 2007 after party leader Ian Paisley decided to go into government with Sinn Fein.
Mr Cubitt resigned from the party and stoody on an independent ticket.
He said at the time: “”Some people have said that I have deserted the DUP, but they have deserted me.
“They have deserted the electorate – and I am going on the 2005 manifesto.
“They have reneged on everything that they said.
“I feel terribly let down. I went out at the last election and I canvassed enthusiastically for the DUP because I believed in their manifesto.
“They have let us all down in that manifesto and I feel let down, and the electorate feel let down, and I am giving the option to vote for me.”
At the time, DUP MP for East Derry, Gregory Campbell, said Mr Cubbitt’s departure came as no surprise.
Today, Mr Campbell paid tribute to him today saying he would be “greatly missed”.
