RAMSEY: PUBLIC MUST BE HEARD ON VASCULAR SERVICES CONSULTATION

SDLP Pat Ramsey MLA:

SDLP Foyle MLA and Chair of the Assembly All Party Group on Diabetes Pat Ramsey has encouraged local people to have their say on the future of Vascular services across Northern Ireland.

The Derry MLA said that the proposed changes threaten service provision in the North West.

He said: “It’s important that local people take the time to respond to the consultation of the future of vascular service provision.

“The consultation proposes the withdrawal of several services from Altnagelvin and, if implemented, would force more people to travel to Belfast for treatment.

“Altnagelvin has some exceptional medical professionals, especially in the field of vascular medicine.

“A reduction in provision locally could result in an inability to provide an around the clock service and therefore see patients saddled with the additional burden of the journey to Belfast.

“The gradual withdrawal of a service like this will have a disproportionately harsh effect on diabetes patients.

“There is a good model of sub regional diabetes care in the North West, these proposed changes will have a detrimental effect on the delivery of that strategy.

“With increased diagnoses of diabetes becoming a trend, this will seriously affect treatment for new patients coming down the line and it’s important that the Health and Social Care Board outlines how they plan to meet their needs.

“I would encourage everyone to read through the consultation document and make a response.

“If anyone needs any further information, my office will be more than happy to provide assistance.”
