Cllr Brian Tierney welcomes new markings outside Pennyburn primary school

SDLP Derry City and Strabane District Councillor Brian Tierney has welcomed work carried out by Transport NI to improve safety outside a primary school on one of Derry’s busiest roads.

Transport NI has repainted faded road markings on both sides of Racecourse Road outside St Patrick’s Primary School in Pennyburn.

Cllr Tierney said: “I welcome this work being carried out as this has been a serious concern for staff and parents alike in recent times.

“The road markings should now keep passing vehicles back from the school gate, allowing children to see both up and down the very busy Racecourse Road as they go to and from school.

“I and my party colleague Cllr Angela Dobbins and representatives from the office of Colum Eastwood MLA attended a site meeting with the school’s principal and Transport NI officials a few months back.

“We also heard from parents and staff who had grave concerns about safety outside the school.

“I am pleased to see this work being carried out and I would appeal to all motorists to abide by the rules of the road and respect the road markings.

“These markings are there for a reason and it is very important that vehicles are kept back from the school gates as they can impair the views of both oncoming motorists and children attempting to cross the road.

“I would like to thank Transport NI for attending the site meeting, listening to and addressing the concerns of parents and staff, and for carrying out this work without undue delay,” councillor Tierney added.
