A COUNTY Derry man who lost his billion pound empire in the economic crash is back at work – driving a digger on a building site.

Drumsurn man Michael Taggart said today that he started his empire with just £1,500 and he’s starting all over again.

Mr Taggart is at the centre of a major case against Ulster Bank. He is suing the bank for damages, saying poor decisions at the bank led to the loss of the Taggart Group six years ago.

A judge in Belfast will rule on the case later this month. The bank is counter-suing.

“I can sit and do nothing or go again and I’ve decided to go again,” said Michael Taggart today.

He is building 82 new homes at Plantation View in Limavady.

“They’re selling very well,” he said, “we’ve sold 20 so far and we only opened the show house three or four weeks ago.

“There’s a demand for quality houses and that’s what we have always delivered, so we’re doing that again.”
