THE Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry is to investigate two additional state-run institutions in Derry.

Former homes at Fort James and Harberton House are now to be examined.

There will also be a separate examination of the activities of paedophile priest Brendan Smyth.

The inquiry has been investigating 13 institutions to date.

It has already heard allegations from victims saying there were beaten by nuns in Derry’s Sisters of Nazareth Home.

The HIA inquiry was set up in 2013 to investigate child abuse in residential institutions in Northern Ireland over a 73-year period, up to 1995.

It is chaired by former High Court judge Sir Anthony Hart QC.

Also on the panel is David Lane and Geraldine Cormack.
