DOHERTY: WEEKEND ATTACKS COWARDLY AND SQUALID

Pat Doherty has described as ‘cowardly and squalid’ three separate arson and vandalism attacks in Strabane and Clady over the weekend.

The Sinn Féin West Tyrone Westminster candidate said: “A petrol bomb attack on a home and car on the Dublin Road in the early hours of Sunday morning was a particularly reckless act. It endangered the lives of the occupants of this and adjoining properties and the severity of this incident was further compounded by the subsequent petrol bomb attack on fire-fighters attending the scene.

“In a second incident, the windscreen of local SDLP Councillor Patsy Kelly was smashed and the actions of whoever used the cover of darkness to carry out this attack contrasts sharply to those of Patsy who, as an elected representative, is prepared to put his head above the parapet and to stand for election.

“In a third extremely serious incident over the weekend,  the oil tanks at two homes at Urney Court in Clady were set alight families forced to flee their homes and the mind-set of whoever done this does not bear thinking about given that it could have resulted in a major tragedy.

“I would extend my sympathy to all those who have been targeted in these cowardly and squalid weekend attacks and I would call upon anyone who as any information about any of these incidents to pass it on to the authorities.”
