psni logoA CROOK who stole money from an 80-year-old man in a Derry bookies shop has handed himself into police – and handed back the money.

The incredible u-turn by the thief followed a story on Derry Daily which caused anger in the community.

The pensioner collected his winnings at the bookies on Monday and had set his wallet down for a second when it was swiped.

CCTV images showed who the thief was amid dire warnings from members of the local community.

Now the man’s family says he has been given his money back by the PSNI.

The thief also gave extra money to pay for the wallet which he had thrown away after emptying it

A relative said: “I would like to thank everyone who commented and shared the story because the person who did it saw how disgusted the people of this town are with the lowlifes that are running about.”

The PSNI are preparing a file on the incident.
