UKIP is to contest the Foyle constituency in May’s General Election.

The party – led by the colour Nigel Farage – has selected Kyle Thompson as its candidate.

He will be up against sitting MP and former SDLP leader Mark Durkan who has held the seat since John Hume stepped aside.

Mr Thompson stood for the party last year in the Derry council elections but was unsuccessful in becoming a councillor.

Foyle is regarded as one of the SDLP’s safest seats to retain in May.

The full list of UKIP Westminster candidates are:

Bob Stoker South Belfast
Brian Higginson West Belfast
Noel Jordan East Antrim
Alan Love Lagan Valley
Alan Day Mid Ulster
Kyle Thompson Foyle
Joe Jordan Strangford
