SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has urged parents in Galliagh to ensure their children are not getting involved in fights organised online.

The Shantallow area councillor made the appeal following reports that large numbers of young people had gathered for fights organised through social media in recent days.

He said: “It is deeply concerning that young people are gathering in large numbers in the Galliagh area to engage serious anti social behaviour.

“I have spoken to the PSNI following reports of such disturbances in the Glencaw and Elaghmore area and they are assessing the situation.

“It is shocking to hear that young people are organising fights over social media.

“I would urge parents to know where their children are as such incidents could lead to someone being seriously injured or worse.”
