ARRESTS AND OUTRAGE AS SCHOOL CHILDREN CHUCK LIFE-SAVING EQUIPMENT INTO THE FOYLE

A NUMBER of school children have been arrested after chucking life-saving equipment from the Peace Bridge into the River Foyle.

Police chiefs say they are shocked and angry after a series of incidents which included setting fires in Derry City Centre in a day of rampage.

Fire crews from Northland Road were also called to the scene.

“City Centre Police and Fire Service yesterday attended numerous reports of a gang of youths involved in anti-social behaviour, throwing life saving equipment from the Peace Bridge and setting fires in the city centre,” said a PSNI Foyle spokesman.

“We would like to reassure the community that we quickly identified and apprehended all the suspects.

“We therefore want to thank everyone who phoned in and assisted the emergency services.’

But the spokesman said there was considerable anger on discovering those responsible were so young.

“We have been shocked by the young age of those involved and would appeal to parents to make sure you know what your children are up to and who they are with,” added the spokesman.
