Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has called for a full investigation into an incident in Maghaberry prison, which led to a stand off between prisoners and staff.

Mr McCartney said this evening: “A full investigation must be carried out into Monday’s incident in Maghaberry prison, which led to a stand off between prisoners in Roe House and prison staff.

“The Prisoner Ombudsman should also carry out a separate investigation into what happened.

“No one wants to see an escalation of tensions in Maghaberry and the best way to improve the situation is to implement the August 2010 agreement between prisoners and prison authorities.

“Everyone should do all in their power to ensure a conflict free environment for prisoners, their families and prison staff.”
