Cllr Angela Dobbins.

SDLP Derry Councillor Angela Dobbins has welcomed a commitment by Transport Ni to “shore up” and maintain an eroded wall along a road leading to Culmore Fort.

Transport NI said it would begin constructing a new riverfront wall along Culmore Point Road as soon as June.

Speaking after the meeting, which was also attended by Rivers Agency representatives and Derry City Council environmental officers, Cllr Dobbins said:

“I am very grateful that a confirmed date for the maintenance work to begin has at last been confirmed”

“The wall was damaged years ago and railings were erected as a temporary measure. At high tides the water overflows onto the road and limiting access.

“Assurances have been given that every effort will be made to have the replacement wall area to match the existing one.

“Commitment was also given that the wall along the Culmore Point Road towards the Culmore Fort, that has been eroded, will be ‘shored up’; and more importantly, Transport NI have said it will regularly maintain this area,” she added.
