Cllr Brian Tierney.

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has been given an assurance from Transport NI that broken street lights at the Madam’s bank road underpass will be repaired within weeks.

Councillor Tierney said the commitment would reassure residents in the area who have been victims of increased anti-social behaviour in recent times.

“It’s very welcome news that Transport NI will finally be able to repair the broken lights at this underpass. Residents in the Old School Lane area are plagued by anti-social behaviour and I am sure they will be reassured by this as it is a step in the right direction to help curb the on-going problem. I am also hopeful that the repaired lights will be secured to protect them from vandalism in future.”

Councillor Tierney added: “I have been seeking a resolution to this issue for a number of months and I am really pleased that we have got this commitment. Street lighting has been an issue that has come to the fore in recent months because of a lack of funding for repairs from DRD. Thankfully it has now been confirmed that all previous restrictions on funding have now been lifted by the DRD Minster Danny Kennedy.

“My party colleague DOE Minster Mark H Durkan supported Minster Kennedy’s previous bids for extra money to repair street lighting and I am glad that the other minsters at the executive table have now come round to our way of thinking and supported the DRD minister’s latest bid in the January monitoring round.”

Councillor Tierney has been told that the lighting repairs at the underpass will take between 4-6 weeks due to a backlog of around 2,000 lights in need of repair in the Derry City Council area.
