ANGER AT UNTREATED ROADS ACROSS NORTH WEST: ‘WE’RE SECOND CLASS CITIZENS IN EVERYTHING’

MOTORISTS have been venting their fury over the state of roads in Derry today after overnight hail, ice and snow.

Snow flurries are continuing today, adding to packed ice on many roads – particularly in rural areas of County Derry.

On a day when Stormont ministers promised to ‘re-balance’ the economy west of the Bann, there is also a call to ‘re-balance’ services here in Derry too.

Derry Daily has been inundated with complaints today about the lack of gritting lorries on our streets and roads.

Driving conditions in the Waterside are particularly poor.

They are also bad further out of the city – in rural areas across County Derry.

Some motorists claim they have been passed by lorries loaded with gritting salt but that it was being spread on the roads.

“If you live in Derry you are reminded that you are a second class citizen all the time, not just when it comes to jobs but when it comes to basic services,” complained a motorist who said it took 90 minutes to get to work today.

“The roads are a disgrace. Everyone knew more snow was coming; it was on Derry Daily, the BBC News and all over social media – yet I have faced this c*** today again.

“I bet people had no bother at all driving around Belfast today.”

There were similar complaints from other motorists today.

The bad news is that more wintry weather is on the way – this evening and overnight into Saturday.

Sporting fixtures have been cancelled; the Bentley Bar Saturday Morning League has cancelled all of its games.
