MELTDOWN! WIDESPREAD FLOODING AFTER THAW AND RAIN

trenchTHERE are reports of flooding across Derry City and County Derry tonight as heavy rain and melting snow combined to send water cascading onto many roads.

The PSNI has issued an urgent notice to motorists to take extra care on the roads overnight and into tomorrow as 80 mile per hour winds hit the North West.

We have been told of flooded roads in Eglinton, Prehen, Newbuildings, Strabane, Limavady, Claudy and at numerous junctions across Derry City.

The flooding comes as Storm Rachel hits Derry.

Wind speeds at Malin Head were measured at more than 70 miles per hour tonight – and the storm hasn’t really started.

The Met Office has issued a wind and rain warning for the North West.

The storm has the potential to cause damage to buildings and the electricity network, say forecasters.

Across the Border in Donegal all secondary schools are closing after a Red Status alert was issued by Met Eireann.

Dozens of primary schools are also closed after Dublin’s Department of Education endorsed closures.

There will be snow again on Thursday, especially for areas of north county Derry.

And there will be more wintry conditions again on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
