DERRY unions have organised a meeting in the city tomorrow for workers at a call centre where some employees have made allegations of bullying and harassment.
The Derry Trades Union council has organised an open meeting in the Unison offices on Clarendon Street at 11am tomorrow (Saturday).
This follows dozens of complaints sparked by a story on Derry Daily today when a number of workers made a series of allegations about work practices and the suspension of members of staff.
Since our story this morning we have been inundated with complaints, with a small number of other people defending the call centre operation.
However the allegations have since gone viral – with client companies of the call centre being contacted via email and social media.
One of the complaints concerns allegations that staff following guidance of managers were later blamed for inaccurate data whilst managers washed their hands of that guidance afterwards.
Eight employees or former employees have reported to Derry Daily that they suffered some sort of diagnosed psychiatric illness as a result of working at the call centre.
We responded to several complaints from current members of staff who felt they had nowhere left to turn to.
However since our story today the number of complaints has grown substantially.
The Derry Trades Union Council said: “Following today’s article in Derry Daily we have literally been inundated with messages of extreme concern regarding call centre workers.
“We are working hard on gathering all information relating to this.
“What would be of great help would be any of the workers contracts so we can scrutinise them and check the terms and conditions.”
The organisation said everyone would be welcome to attend its meeting tomorrow where cases with be dealt with in confidence.
A number of employees from Donegal claim they were told they were not entitled to join a union.
Under the law every worker is entitled to be a member of a union.
