THERE have been glowing tributes paid to Limavady toddler Callum Logue who passed away on New Year’s Eve.

The five year old had been battling a debilitating illness all his young life.

Dozens of messages have been posted on Callum’s Facebook page set up to raise awareness of his condition and also money for treatment.

One message summed all those who had been touched by his short life.

It read: “Heaven has gained a wee fighter and angel rest in peace wee man xx.”

Callum Logue was diagnosed with septo-optic dysplasia shortly after birth.

He was also blind, was taking medication for diabetes.

His family, friends and neighbours in Co Derry have over the years raised thousands of pounds for his treatment.

The wee boy’s parents, Emma Magee and Gerard Logue, had spent long hours researching any cures to his his condition.

Money raised helped him visit China to consider stem cell treatment.

Limavady SDLP councillor Gerry Mullan said: “Everyone knew this little boy and there’s a great deal of sadness throughout the borough.

“This is going to be a very difficult time for the family and they will be in my thoughts and prayers.

“Thousands were raised for little Callum and everyone rallied around. I remember them raising money to go to China. It’s such a very sad start to 2015.”

Family friend and fundraiser Neil Mullan said: “He brought so many people together.

“Everyone wanted to raise money and help him. He was such an inspiration and this really puts life into perspective.

“Gerard and Emma have been through so much and deserve so much credit the way they cared for little Callum. It’s just heartbreaking.”

Hundreds of people are expected to attend Callum’s funeral in his home town on Sunday.
