RESIDENTS of Hollymount in the Waterside have hit out after street lights in the area which lit up the back of their homes were removed.

They say the lights gave them an extra feeling of security.

“I have been contacted by a number of residents in Hollymount regarding the recent street lighting upgrade in the area,” said Cllr Christopher Jackson.

“There are serious concerns about the removal of the two streetlights that lit up each of the back squares in Hollymount, making residents feel vulnerable in their own homes and making it almost impossible for them to get their bin to the collection point at night.

“I have contacted Transport NI (formally DRD Roads Service) a number of times on this issue, highlighting the anger felt by residents that the lights had been removed without consultation. After numerous phone calls, letters and a site visit I have received a response from Transport NI.

“Transport NI states that these lights were removed according to current policy, and confirming that no plans are in place to replace them in the near future.

“I share residents  frustration on this issue and can assure them I will continue to campaign to get these lights reinstated. I have written to the DRD minister requesting him to review the current policy and I will keep them updated on any developments.

“In the meantime if any resident   feels particularly vulnerable as a result of these lights being removed, please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss any measures that can be put in place to help you feel more secure in your home.”
