AT THIS time of year, young people will have long lists of presents they would like for Christmas, but police in the North West are encouraging parents to think long and hard before agreeing to buy quads or scramblers.
“The first thing to consider is where the quad or scrambler will be used,” said Constable Stuart Crutchley, of the police Accident Prevention Unit in the area.
“Scramblers and quads can only legally be used on private property with the permission of the landowner.
“Most people do not have the large expanse of private property that is needed for full use of quads and scramblers.
“All too often users end up on streets and in housing estates and this not only creates a nuisance for neighbours, but a danger to the users and other on the road.
“Sadly, there have been incidents in which quad users have lost their lives in crashes while using their machine on the open road.
“We regularly receive reports about young people riding these scramblers and quads recklessly in public spaces and on the roads. Parents must ensure their children understand both the legal and safety needs before and during the use of these vehicles.
“Police will seize any they find being unlawfully used.”
