Local schools have been invited to take part in the 24th annual All Ireland Schools Quiz, organised by the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU), which has been launched using a fun giraffe mascot and theme of “Stick Your Neck Out” to encourage teamwork amongst children of primary school age.

The quiz is one of the most exciting events in the primary school calendar, annually attracting entries from around 6,000 primary school children across the North.

The competition consists of two knockout stages at local and regional level and culminates in an all Ireland Final to be held in Dublin’s RDS on April 12th next year when 100 qualifying teams from across Ireland will compete under the watchful eye of RTE personality quiz master Marty Whelan.

The first round of heats in Northern Ireland will be run by volunteers from over 60 credit unions. The questions have been compiled by primary school teachers and will cover topics such as geography, history, music, literature and sport.

Speaking at the launch of the quiz, Derry’s Rosemary O’Doherty, treasurer of the ILCU, said the quiz provided children from around the country with the chance to have lots of fun while learning the importance of team work in achieving success.

She added: “We’d like to wish everyone the very best of luck at the local and regional levels and we look forward to seeing you at the all Ireland final next April.”

The Quiz is divided into two sections: one for children up to 11 years and another for children between 11 and 13 years.

Local quiz winners receive prizes from their local credit unions, then will go through to the regional finals with still more prizes on offer for the individuals and their schools before the final play-offs for the national title.

Regional winners plus runners-up qualify to compete for their category’s all Ireland title with the winners and runner-ups receiving a silver salver, a significant personal prize and will take a handsome cheque back to their respective school.

Every finalist receives a special certificate marking their achievement.

Registration for the 2015 Schools Quiz is now open, for registration forms or further information, contact your local credit union or visit the event’s page on the ILCU website: http://www.creditunionni.co.uk/communications/events/schoolsquiz2014/
