Thirty-four young people, aged 12 to 21 years, from Rosemount and Glen areas of Derry, have taken part in a Western Education and Library Board (WELB) Youth Intervention programme, offering a range of diversionary and developmental activities, to ensure the varied needs of young people are met.
Facilitated by WELB youth workers, the programme aimed to bring together young people and provide them with the support and opportunities they need to empower themselves to take a more active role within their community.
Gavin Deeney, youth worker at Rosemount Youth Centre, said feedback was positive and the young people relayed how they felt encouraged and enjoyed taking part in the educational and constructive activities, acquiring new skills and interests in problem solving, decision making and leadership roles.
“The programme was a great success and was well supported by parents,” he added.
It is hoped the programme will run again next year and engage more organisations in the Outer West to make an even greater impact.
