SCRAP AIR PASSENGER DUTY FOR CHILDREN – DURKAN

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has co-sponsored a parliamentary motion at Westminster calling on the British Government to reduce the financial impact on hardworking families in Derry and throughout the North by scrapping the Air Passenger Duty on children’s flights.

Currently, Air Passenger Duty adds, on average, an extra £52 on flights to Europe and £134 on long haul flights for a family of four.

Mr Durkan, who is supporting the Westminster lobby for the tax on children’s flights to be scrapped, has also called for “across the board” reductions in Air Passenger Duty for people in Northern Ireland.

He said: “Air Passenger Duty is acting as a barrier to allowing hardworking families in Derry and throughout the North to take holidays abroad, especially when the majority already have to pay a premium due to school term-time restrictions.

“I am therefore calling on the Chancellor George Osborne to reduce the financial impact on hardworking families by scrapping the charge on children’s flights in his Autumn Statement.”
