Cllr Brian Tierney.

The family whose car was destroyed in an arson attack involving three masked men in Derry last night have been left “shocked and distraught” by the incident, SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has said.

Three men, wearing balaclavas, are believed to used a petrol bomb to torch the vehicle parked outside the family’s home in Glencaw Park in the Galliagh area of the city at 11.45pm.

Condemning those responsible for what he described as an “unprovoked and totally reprehensible,” Cllr Tierney said he had visited the family this morning and they remained “shocked and distraught following the cowardly attack.”

Cllr Tierney added: “There are four young children living in the house, one of whom has disabilities and requires transport to medical appointments several times a week.

“This thuggish act has left this family without a vehicle to make these essential trips.

“I understand the arsonists were wearing balaclavas and made off in the direction of Leafair Park.

“I would urge anyone with information on those responsible to contact the police as such acts of violence and intimidation cannot be tolerated in our community.”
